Kgokelo

All too often, when we say women and gender-diverse individuals, there is an assumption or a conflation of “women and gender-diverse” with the feminine or femmes. This is not strictly a space for people who identify as femme or feminine. This is a space for people who have been marginalized as a result of their gender, regardless of what that gender is. We are not gatekeeping gender identities or how people perceive themselves. If someone identifies as a woman or gender-diverse, Kgokelo is a safe place for them to share their work.

We recognize the intersection of identities and the varying ways in which individuals are marginalized based on the different aspects of their identities, be it race, religion, gender, sexuality, health, etc., and have chosen gender as our organizational centre point but Kgokelo is not a database limited to work about gender and we do not want artists to feel necessary to “prove” or “perform” their gender to share work.
