MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to record the living history of South Africa’s culture by documenting the creative journeys and work of women and gender-diverse playwrights.

VISION

Kgokelo aims to develop the voices of South African women and genderdiverse playwrights, to create a space for theatrical work to exist outside of performance, and to foster the artistic voice of South Africa on a larger scale.

Kgokelo offers a sustainable network for playwrights to utilise when creating new South African work in the future. By improving the production and dissemination of local content through access to otherwise inaccessible writing, Kgokelo hopes to foster the future of South Africa’s theatre.

INTENTIONS

Spurred on by a need for community and support while writing plays in isolation, Kgokelo is both a base for current playwrights to connect from and an archive for future playwrights to connect with.

Kgokelo is a database and archive of South African women and genderdiverse playwrights and their work. It is intended to increase the visibility of South African playwrights and accessibility to their work.

Founded in conjunction with the grantfunded project, “A Season of Storms: New Writing”, Kgokelo offers playwrights a community to connect with, grow with, build with, and share work with so that we can strengthen our abilities as artists as a whole. The goal of Kgokelo is to create an open-access database of playscripts, script drafts, research documents, and artist profiles. Kgokelo aims to be a point of reference for future educators, learners, writers, directors, producers, scholars, and laymen who are interested in South Africa’s theatre scene. As an archive of the work of South African artists, Kgokelo strives to be a point of reference for future work.
